Utility Experience

Individual members of GSL have carried out many projects in generation, transmission and distribution during their long Service in KPLC, KenGen, industry and the energy sector.

They were involved in feasibility studies, design, implementation,operation and maintenance of generation projects such as hydro (40MW Masinga, 84MW Kamburu, 145MW Gitaru, 40MW Kindaruma and 145MW Kiambere), 45 MW Olkaria I and 65MW Olkaria II geothermal, 60MW gas turbine and 70MW diesel thermal projects.

They were also involved in feasibility studies, design,implementation operation and maintenance of transmission and Distribution projects in Kenya. The transmission voltages are 220 and 132 kV; sub-transmission of 66 and 33kV; distribution system 11kV and supply at 415 and 240 volts.

Carrying out rural electrification projects covering off-grid diesel power plants; hybrid wind/diesel plants and mini-hydro as well as operation and maintenance of isolated rural distribution systems.

Feasibility studies, implementation, operation and maintenance of SCADA/Energy Management projects including Telecommunications and IT services.

Planning, design, implementation, operation and maintenance of processing plants such as food and beverages factories.

Preparation and annual updates of Kenyan Least Cost Power Master Plan; carrying out electricity retail tariff reviews and bulk tariff studies.

Strategic Plans including formulation of draft Kenya Energy Policy,power grid code and electricity rules.

Regional Experience

Up to December 2002, one of the key GSL staff was involved in regional power initiatives as:

• A member of East African Community Energy Sector Committee in initiating the preparation of the East African Power Master Plan which is being undertaken by Acres International (BKS).
• Member of Zambia-Tanzania-Kenya Power Interconnector Project Steering Committee.
• Member of bilateral committee (with Kenya represented by KPLC, KenGen, MOE) responsible for reviewing Kenya power imports/exchanges from Uganda (UEB, UETCL).
